PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST BRINGS PROFIT!
If you are working with your team members or employees on this process, you must genuinely put people first and not merely talk about it.
Author of 13 books, Jeffrey Pfeffer who is the Thomas D Dee II Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University since 1979 wrote The Human Equation: Building Profits By Putting People First. He points out:
“Over the past decade or so, numerous rigorous studies conducted both within specific industries and in samples of organizations that cross industries have demonstrated the enormous economic returns obtained through the implementation of what are variously called high involvement, high performance or high commitment management practice.”₃
It simply means that when you truly put people first, really empower them and have their participation in the team and organization, the profits will spontaneously pour in. We all know this and that people are “our most important asset” and yet many organizations do not know how to truly capitalize on this fact in both an intelligent and genuine way.
There is definitely a disturbing disconnect in organizational management even though research, experience and common sense all increasingly point to a direct relationship between a company’s financial success and its commitment to management practices that treat people as assets.
Common sense is not so common, after all. Organizations are often run by human beings who have little self-knowledge and self-awareness. It would therefore be difficult for them to be evolved leaders, operating enlightened organizations that can be both conscious or compassionate and highly profitable at the same time.
The terms “Conscious Capitalism” and “Compassionate Capitalism” are now being bandied around by people, as the solution to what’s happening to our world in crisis. Yes, they definitely describe the perfect solution (for the time being) not just to the corporate world but to our world in general.
However, they cannot be used as current buzz words, without total authenticity and integrity. Otherwise, our world will never evolve because we are acting as individuals who are thinking way too small, still wanting to make a quick buck and gain material success for ourselves. We have to come from real strength and power, aiming to turn the economic tide around, as we turn our organizations around in a big way and simultaneously maximize the opportunity to positively impact our world through Corporate Social Responsibility.
It’s very simple, really. If leaders grow personally and run their organizations differently, putting people first, they will be able not only to succeed immeasurably for themselves and their organizations, they will be able to impact the world at large. Thinking big and thinking collectively pays!!
